This post is dedicated to Walter Boelen, dive instructor and possbly the wisest man on this planet I have ever met or will ever meet. To me he is an idol par excellence, insightful and calm. Been there, done that and content with the t-shirts. Especially the last fact is where he surely excels me in ![]()
He taught me some really interesting views on life, but the one thing I appreciate most of the things I learned is a saying of his.
We were talking about jobs and he told me about a soon coming break he has to take as he is enlisted for a transfer trip of a sailing boat from Tenerife to the Netherlands. Three weeks of sailing a boat for which he gets paid instead of diving, for which he also gets paid. He put on a very serious face and said: “Stress, every day stress. Life is a fight!” Then he raised one corner of his mouth and then the other, forming a very impish smile.
Yes, life IS a fight, but it is also what you make of it. Choose your goals wisely and you can fight your fights on known territories, making them easy to win. I guess nothing in life is a Sunday morning walk (except from Sunday morning walks, but even there I’m not quite sure). Making the best of it is probably the only thing, that can make the life be worth living. It’s hard for a very rational person like me, not to worry about everything and not to worry too much, but if you do, you only get stressed and fight against shadows when you should be happy with what you’ve got. This knowledge is not new to me, but I think these words make it much easier to remind me because I tend to forget.
Life is a fight!
